Gesher hosting free retirement re-employment workshops.
A 75-year-old plumber looking for employment with less demanding physical work and an 80-year-old employee laid off after decades with a car company are just two of the many older adults who have recently reached out to Gesher Human Services, one of the largest human service agencies in metro Detroit, looking for career assistance. In response, the nonprofit organization will be holding a series of three free Retirement Reemployment workshops this summer on June 11, July 16 and August 13 from 2-3:30 p.m.
The programs will be held in person at Gesher’s headquarters (29699 Southfield Road, Southfield) and will discuss the financial, social and emotional considerations of working as a mature adult; the pros and cons of returning to work; and provide attendees with a career decision action plan.
Niecy Mohammed left her job after 26 years after the nonprofit was forced to shut down amid the pandemic.
The 66-year-old has spent three years in retirement and, after deciding that was long enough, went on the hunt for a new job. But finding a new gig can be tough for those out of the workforce.
That’s when Mohammed found Gesher Human Services, which has its own Women to Work program. Along with a robust labor market and job creation still coming in above expectations, it lined up to be a perfect match.
Now she’s at Presbyterian Villages of Michigan as a new administrative assistant. Fittingly, the organization helps set up housing for seniors.
For Mohammed, the experience has been an enlightening one.

The two-part webinar will discuss how trauma can be due to overwhelming debt or job loss, or due to generational financial hardships or behaviors with money.
The two-part webinar will discuss how trauma can be due to overwhelming debt or job loss, or due to generational financial hardships or behaviors with money. A recent survey by Experian®, a multinational data analytics and consumer credit reporting company, found that 68 per cent of U.S. adults feel they have suffered from, or are currently suffering from, financial trauma. The report said that this finding explained the prevalence of negative feelings and angst related to financial matters, with around 65% of adults admitting to experiencing negative thoughts, flashbacks and anxiety when dealing with financial issues.
It’s arguably one of the most selfless roles someone can play in life, a caregiver. It’s a job that requires around-the-clock care and compassion.
On Sunday, the caregivers were the ones getting taken care of at West Bloomfield’s “A Day off for Caregivers” event hosted by The Dorothy & Peter Brown Adult Day Care Center.
“It’s a day for all the caregivers to relax and enjoy and not think about everyday life for our loved ones,” said Beth Sadoff, a Metro Detroit caregiver to and wife of Edward, who lives with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
