JOIN Internships Let Students Build Careers While Strengthening Jewish Detroit

Gesher Human Services’ annual paid summer internship program for Jewish college students, known as JOIN, is now accepting applications through March 1. As in previous years, new work sites have been added and there are spots for 16 students to take part.

Data suggests competition for these positions is increasing. For example, internship postings on the career website Handshake dropped by more than 15% between January 2023 and January 2025 while applications per internship increased, with an average jumping from 62 to 109.

JOIN, an acronym for the Jeannette and Oscar Cook Jewish Occupational Intern Program, offers an eight-week program to students who are considering a career working in the nonprofit world, particularly in the Jewish community. It would also be suitable for those planning a career in the corporate, for-profit space, but who would like to learn more about their community for future roles in lay leadership or volunteering. In addition, students who are considering careers in psychology or social work would have the opportunity to gain valuable experience, too.
